Companies

CoisCéim Dance Theatre creates, and presents contemporary dance theatre to national and international audiences.

The name comes from the Irish word for footstep and is pronounced “kush kame”.

Founded in 1995, CoisCéim’s style of performance is contemporary and vibrant, with a knowing regard for the everyday. Artistic Director, David Bolger embraces a selection of dance styles to articulate stories and emotions that are relevant to the landscapes in which we live. The scale of the company's work ranges from duets in a hotel bedroom, (Chamber Made) to the large-scale spectacle, A Dash of Colour (which was seen by millions on television and involved over 75,000 people for the opening ceremony of the Special Olympics, 2003).

In 2001, CoisCéim became the first dance company to secure funding from Bord Scannán na hÉireann for a dance film. Co-produced with Rough Magic Films, Hit and Run was filmed on location around Dublin. It premiered as part of the first International Dance Festival at the Irish Film Institute in May 2002 and was shown on Network 2 Television on 25 December 2002. It has subsequently been shown at over 16 national and international film festivals during which time it has won five major awards including the Paula Citron Award for choreography, the very prestigious Jury Award at the Dance on Camera at the Lincoln Centre Festival for Dance in New York and a Creative Excellence award at the Houston Indie Festival in 2002.

Touring Policy

Touring, both nationally and internationally is a key part of CoisCéim. In Ireland, the company has developed strong relationships with an informal network of venues that have a like-minded approach in actively promoting dance. Each year, CoisCéim aims to tour at least one production nationally.

Internationally, CoisCéim has developed a strong reputation through presentations at prestigious series and festivals such as Peak Performances, Jacob’s Pillow Festival in America and the Ten Days on the Island Festival in Tasmania. As part of the Ireland China Festival of Arts & Culture, CoisCéim played in Beijing and Shanghai to sell out audiences. With the support of Culture Ireland, CoisCéim has also performed at the Venice Biennale, Tanzmesse Festival in Düsseldorf and at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe on a number of occasions. It is the recipient of many awards including two Edinburgh Fringe Firsts and an Argus Angel Award at the 2012 Brighton Festival.
